What you should be looking for is a 'HIGH STALL' torque converter. USA 2001 540 had a Tiptronic (as you so call SPORTY) gearbox but only a standard torque converter. 2003 540iA ///M had a HIGH STALL torque converter. Like Burning2nd said, don't be a fool and swap an old torque converter onto a salvaged Tranny, it'll bit you in the ass big time! $$$ wise, expect to pay around 400.00 US$ and they'll need a core change, meaning they'll want your old 'high stall' torque converter and since you don't have one to give, you'll pay an additional $150+. That doesn't include the seals etc etc etc Goodluck!
If you swap a Autotraggic with out putting A BRAND NEW converter in. Your a fool asking for trouble.
So just figure out where your going to get your NEW converter from. Do your front pump seal, your rear output seal. Flip it over do the pan and filter flip it back over put the NEW converter you have in (little bit of oil around the seal face) gently spin the converter in as you pick up on it till it clunks in Then set the trans package over in the corner and ready to install i know it would be a bad idea to not get a new converter before putting in another tranny in. Idk what those seals look like. I did the filter and gasket tho.
Im still having a hard time with the used tranny i picked up at ebay, i just dont know the difference between the base and the sport tranny. I hope its just the converter and nothing else in the tranny. The shorter stall tranny is like 30 pounds lighter than the base.idk why.

So before 2003, my 2001 used the same torque converter as the base? How can I verify this? 2001 sport with steptronic had a basic torque converter, only the 740iA had the high stall converter installed. 2001 540iA had 2.81 diff, 2003 540iA ///M had a 3.15 diff thus had the higher stall converter.
2001 USA spec sport was just some suspension mods and badges, nothing more! Two ways to check.pull it apart and check the numbers as per my pic or - put it in D/S, foot on the brake hard and floor the gas pedal, you should be able to reach around 2600 - 3000 without wheel spin, you'll start burning rubber and getting traction at around 2800 RPM Basic torque converter will start wheel spin and traction at around 1600 RPM PS if $hitty transmission or torque converter, you'll blow it up:rofl::rofl::rofl. I know it would be a bad idea to not get a new converter before putting in another tranny in. Idk what those seals look like.
